Africa Vegan Resta
urant Week is set to make waves across the continent, amplifying the plant-based food justice movement by increasing the accessibility of healthy, convenient, and sustainable plant-based options. This landmark event seeks to replace animal products with nutritious, plant-based restaurant meals, promoting widespread awareness of veganism and healthy eating.
As the first of its kind in Africa, Africa Vegan Restaurant Week is a continent-wide campaign and week-long celebration organized by activists and organizations from across the region. Participants in approximately 30 countries will simultaneously launch the campaign, creating a unified effort to increase access to healthy, plant-based food options and encourage restaurants to embrace plant-based menus.
In 2024, Africa Vegan Restaurant Week will take place from 2nd to 8th September, with Kenya being one of the key participating countries. Leading the initiative in Kenya’s North Coast is Virginia Ruguru, popularly known as Aunty Vee, a plant-based champion and the driving force behind Thrive Africa Vegan Women’s Initiative and Torch Initiatives. With her leadership, about 10 restaurants in the region will be participating in the celebrations.
The week-long event aims to create awareness about the significance of plant-based eating, an important cultural tradition known for promoting healthy living, enhancing food security, and supporting environmental sustainability.
By participating in Africa Vegan Restaurant Week, these restaurants are not only offering delicious and nutritious meals but are also contributing to a larger movement that champions the well-being of people and the planet.
