Sauti za Busara in Zanzibar, Tanzania, is calling on artists to apply to perform at the 2026 edition of the festival set to take place at the historic Stone Town from February 6 to 8.

Renowned as East Africa’s premier music festival, Sauti za Busara is held annually in February at the iconic Ngome Kongwe (Old Fort) and has become a cornerstone of Zanzibar’s cultural calendar.

Festival overview

Marking its 23rd year in 2026, this annual celebration of African music and culture promises to be a vibrant showcase of talent, unity, and the rich heritage of the African continent.

Over the years, it has featured over 460 bands from more than 60 countries, spanning genres from traditional taarab and jazz to Afrobeats, reggae, hip hop, and electronica.

The festival is celebrated for its vibrant atmosphere, diverse musical programming, and its role in promoting African music and culture on the global stage. It has been recognised by the BBC World Service as one of Africa’s best and most respected music events.

2026 festival highlights
  • Diverse lineup: The 2026 edition is expected to feature over 400 artists from across Africa. The lineup will showcase a blend of traditional and contemporary African music, offering something for every music enthusiast.
  • Multiple stages: Performances will take place across various stages in Stone Town, including the main stage and additional venues such as Forodhani and Fumba Town. These locations provide unique settings that enhance the festival experience.
  • Carnival parade: The festival will kick off with a vibrant street parade featuring colourful floats, traditional costumes, and lively music. The parade route will wind through the narrow streets of Stone Town, connecting intimately with locals and offering abundant photo opportunities.
  • Swahili Encounters: In collaboration with the Dhow Countries Music Academy, the festival will present Swahili Encounters, a series of performances that highlight the rich musical traditions of the Swahili coast and Africa.
  • Movers & Shakers Forum: This platform will bring together artists, industry professionals, and enthusiasts to discuss trends, challenges, and opportunities in the African music scene. It serves as a valuable networking opportunity for those involved in the music industry.
Artist selection criteria: What the festival looks for

Sauti za Busara is more than just entertainment; it’s a platform for meaningful, authentic voices from Africa. Preference is given to:

  • Unique music with a strong cultural identity, rooted in or connected to Africa.
  • Women artists or bands led by women.
  • Young, new, and emerging talent deserving of international exposure.
  • Songs with positive, socially relevant messages that reflect real stories and uplift communities.
  • Music that is performed 100% live! No playback or pre-recorded tracks.

These criteria ensure that the festival remains a vibrant space for genuine, live musical expression with a purpose.
