The Uproot Project Fellowship is calling on journalists from around the world to apply for its 2025 programme.
The Uproot Project Fellowship is designed to support underrepresented journalists in pursuing in-depth reporting projects on critical environmental issues.
Over the course of the year, seven fellows will receive up to $2,000 in funding to cover travel and reporting expenses, as well as editorial support from The Uproot Project to place their stories with media outlets. The call is open to applicants from all countries.
The Uproot Project Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to early-career journalists passionate about environmental storytelling.
The projects should highlight how environmental and climate challenges intersect with other forms of inequity, focusing on one of four key categories: environmental justice, climate solutions, water, food and culture, or science. The fellowship is committed to amplifying fresh perspectives from early-career journalists, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.
This fellowship provides up to $2,000 to support travel, reporting expenses, and other costs for projects focusing on urgent environmental issues. Whether you’re exploring environmental justice, climate solutions, the intersections of water, food, and culture, or scientific perspectives, your story could be the one that sheds light on crucial yet overlooked topics.
Criteria
- Applicants must be members of The Uproot Project (membership is free).
- Early-career journalists, including those new to the environmental/climate beat, freelancers without full-time newsroom experience, recent journalism school graduates, and scientists with strong writing clips but without formal journalism training, are eligible.
- The proposed story idea must be relevant and should align to the four focus categories: environmental justice, climate solutions, water, food and culture, or science.
- Applicant’s must be able to execute the proposed project effectively.

- Fellowship application (specific format to be provided upon applying).
- Writing clips or work samples showcasing relevant experience.
