How ‘popping the question’ is evolving – First Group Hotels and Resorts

For years, February — widely known as the month of love — has dominated proposal season, with Valentine’s Day becoming the most popular time for popping the question.

From candlelit dinners and red roses to carefully staged ring reveals, engagement trends have long followed a predictable script shaped by romantic films, social media, and pop culture.

But as relationships evolve and couples seek more personal and meaningful experiences, the way people propose is changing, marking a shift in modern engagement trends and redefining what it means to say “yes” in today’s world.

“Valentine’s Day may be considered cliché for a proposal by some, but there is a certain magic about the most romantic day of the year that continues to appeal to couples,” says managing director of First Group Hotels and Resorts, Shaun Lamont.

He notes, though, that there’s a shift in how and where ‘the question is popped’. Many couples want proposals to feel personal – distinctly theirs – rather than following an established script simply because that is how it’s generally done.

This transition helps explain why more engagements are now planned around overnight stays, allowing the moment to extend well beyond the question itself. Proposing during a night or weekend getaway has become increasingly popular, according to Lamont, and for good reason. A getaway creates space: no rush, no distractions, and no pressure to return to everyday life immediately afterwards. Built into the stay itself, the proposal can unfold naturally, allowing the celebration to continue longer, and with the support of resort staff, the experience becomes seamless and the moment truly the couple’s own.

Five types of proposals are especially popular:

1. A quiet hike

There is nothing quite like proposing on a mountainside with sweeping views, overlooking the world and promising to build a life together from that moment on.

Many resorts located in or at the foot of a mountain can arrange private hikes for the proposer, carefully planning the route and timing, to ensure the experience is intimate, romantic and unforgettable.

2. A classic beach proposal

Romantic, timeless and undeniably picture perfect, the beach remains a favourite for a reason. Early morning or sunset walks, arranged around the resort’s location, offer privacy, soft light and a sense of calm.

With the help of the resort team, couples can even arrange for a discreet photographer, ensuring the moment is captured without an audience, followed by a private breakfast or dinner.

3. A personalised puzzle or clue-based game

Many resorts will assist with customised experiences like puzzles or clue-based games, similar to a scavenger hunt, created to lead to a reveal. The clues or challenges are carefully planned so that there is only one outcome: a win, with the final moment culminating in the proposal.

4. A private dinner in your room

Room service takes on a whole new meaning when it becomes part of a proposal, allowing the couple to enjoy the moment without interruptions.

A carefully prepared, beautifully presented, private dinner paired with champagne or a good wine and soft lighting sets the scene for romance. Perfect for those who prefer being alone without public attention.

5. The traditional restaurant dinner… with a twist

For those who prefer the timeless charm of a classic dinner proposal, the resort or hotel team can arrange some thoughtful touches – like dessert with the couple’s names, a server delivering flowers and champagne at the right moment, or even a musician playing the couple’s favourite song.

Other diners can also be subtly involved, through applause, raised glasses, or a collective cheer when the question is asked. The result is a joyful celebration that the couple will treasure.

“While an engagement is always memorable, pairing the proposal with a planned escape – such as an overnight stay accompanied by a customised, personal experience – enhances the romance and will allow the magic and excitement of the moment to last even longer for the couple,” concludes Lamont.
