Noni Mbugguss, the founder of Runway Against GBV, has announced that this year’s event will be held at Saffron Garden hotel in Malindi, Kenya, on October 20, 2024.
This initiative aims to raise awareness and mobilise community support to combat the pervasive issue of gender-based violence.
Recognising the deeply entrenched social stigma that often silences survivors, this programme seeks to empower individuals to speak out against violence and advocate for change within their communities.
Mbugguss conceptualised the project with the core belief that education and community involvement are key to addressing GBV. By creating a platform that highlights the stories and perspectives of survivors, the initiative aims to challenge societal norms that perpetuate violence and silence victims.
“The name ‘Runway Against GBV'”‘ itself symbolises a path forward — a runway that invites dialogue, understanding, and action against gender-based violence,” Mbugguss said.
At the heart of this initiative is a transformative in-house three-day boot camp designed specifically for survivors of GBV. This boot camp serves multiple purposes which include:
• Skill Development: The programme provides essential skills training that enhances the participants’ confidence and self-sufficiency. Survivors engage in workshops that may focus on various areas such as public speaking, self-defence, financial literacy and career development.
By equipping them with practical skills, the bootcamp aims to create a sense of empowerment and agency among the participants.
•Healing and Support: The boot camp also serves as a safe space for participants to share their experiences and connect with others who have faced similar challenges.
Group discussions and support sessions allow them to process their trauma, rebuild their self-esteem, and foster resilience.
• Awareness Raising: Participants learn how to advocate for themselves and their communities effectively. They gain insights into the broader societal issues surrounding GBV, which strengthens their resolve to speak out and contribute to the fight against violence.
The boot camp culminates in a celebratory red carpet pageant, an event that serves as both a showcase of the participants’ growth and a powerful statement against GBV.
This pageant offers survivors a platform to express their newfound confidence and abilities, allowing them to present themselves not just as survivors but as empowered individuals capable of inspiring others.
The event emphasises the personal growth and accomplishments of each participant through presentations, performances, and speeches. It highlights their resilience and journey toward empowerment.
“At the climactic highlight of the evening, one participant wil be crowned “Miss Diva.” This title is not merely symbolic but represents recognition of their journey, leadership and commitment to advocating against GBV. The winner often takes on a role as an ambassador for the cause, continuing to raise awareness and support for survivors in their community.” she concluded.
This year’s boot camp will be held at Saffron Garden from October 17-19, 2024.
