Kenyan Afro-R&B artist Wendy Kay has released a new track titled ‘Sema’, which is available for streaming on major digital platforms.

‘Sema’ is a captivating track that delves into the complexities of love, desire, and emotional vulnerability. With a dynamic blend of alternative R&B and indie soul influences, the song creates a sensual and romantic atmosphere.

With its sensual and romantic atmosphere, ‘Sema’ invites listeners into a world of intimate connections and heartfelt pleas.

The lyrics explore themes of longing and frustration in a relationship, where the artist yearns for acknowledgment and intimacy. The chorus, “Sema Jina langu”, which translates to “Say my name”, becomes a powerful plea for recognition and affection.

Musically, ‘Sema’ features a rich instrumentation palette, including acoustic guitar, bass guitar, electric guitar, percussion, and synthesisers that create a warm and intimate soundscape. The male vocals carry a high presence throughout the track, adding an emotional depth that complements the song’s themes.

With its relatable themes and engaging melodies, ‘Sema’ is poised to resonate with fans of R&B and indie music alike, providing a heartfelt soundtrack for those navigating the complexities of romance.

‘Sema’ is the first track from a two-track EP of the same name, marking a significant release for Wendy Kay and setting the stage for a compelling musical journey.

The second track from the EP is slated for release at the end of February 2025, promising an exciting continuation of this musical exploration.

Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, Wendy Kay is an Afro-urban-driven recording and performing artist and budding producer. A two-time Café Ngoma Awards nominee, she has been featured on two seasons of Coke Studio Africa as a background singer while pursuing her own career.

Exposed to music from an early age and having begun singing and writing songs as a teenager, her musical style is heavily influenced by R&B legends such as Mariah Carey and Afropop queen Tiwa Savage, as well as East African artists like Mpongo Love and Sanaipei Tande.

Her songwriting explores themes of love, both romantic and platonic, as well as life experiences and personal growth. Wendy is known for her strong vocal production skills, which have been inspired by artists such as Victoria Monet and Ariana Grande.

Wendy Kay’s education and training in music include a year-long artist development programme at Sauti Academy, as well as membership in the perFORM incubator where she honed her skills as a music business creative and live performer. She studied music production at Santuri East Africa’s SEMA production school.
