Kenyan singer Zalali has released a new track titled ‘Daughter’.
Written and performed by Zalali and produced by KiliHippie, ‘Daughter’ is a tender and introspective exploration of identity, heritage, and familial love.
This R&B/neo-soul track, with its chill beats and ethereal atmosphere meshed with Zalali’s distinct, captivating voice, creates a deeply introspective and emotive listening experience and serves as a poignant reflection on the bonds that tie us together.
The song opens with vivid imagery, painting a picture of a young woman who bears unmistakable resemblances to both her parents, with the lines – Got a beautiful smile, teeth aligned / Just like her mama’s / Visible veins running through her arm / Like her daddy’s – capturing the physical manifestations of genetic inheritance, symbolising a deeper connection to one’s parents.
As the narrative unfolds, Zalali delves into the protagonist’s moment of self-realisation: When she looks into the mirror, yeah she can’t deny it / It’s clear to see / That she’s part of something bigger.
This observation speaks to the universal experience of recognising oneself as part of a larger familial and cultural tapestry.
The chorus, with its repetitive affirmation “She, her mama’s daughter mmm / She, her daddy’s girl,” reinforces the dual nature of identity – a blend of maternal and paternal influences that shape who we are. This duality is further emphasised by the line “Yeah she’s split into half of them,” suggesting both the challenge and beauty of reconciling different aspects of one’s heritage.
The song concludes with a comforting reminder in Swahili and English: “Usiwaisahau, there’s love at home (Don’t ever forget there’s love at home).” This multilingual element not only adds cultural depth but also conveys a universal message of unconditional love and belonging that transcends language barriers.
Through its soulful vocals, emotive production, and heartfelt lyrics, ‘Daughter’ offers a moving meditation on the complexities of identity, the indelible bonds of family, and the enduring power of love.
Zalali’s artistry shines brightly in this track, showcasing her ability to blend rich storytelling with a sound that is both fresh and timeless. With ‘Daughter’, she stakes her claim as a storyteller and a rising star in the Kenyan music scene.
