Muzikawi re-releases iconic Ethiopian album Stereo Instrumental Music by Ibex Band

Ethiopian record label Muzikawi has announced the re-release of Stereo Instrumental Music, the groundbreaking 1976 album by the legendary Ibex Band.

This influential record, which has shaped the course of modern Ethiopian music, was released on April 11, 2025, on 2LP and major streaming platforms worldwide.

Originally recorded in 1976 (Ge’ez Year 1968) using cutting-edge four-track technology, Stereo Instrumental Music remains a milestone in Ethiopian music history.

This groundbreaking album features the innovative sounds of Giovanni Rico and Selam Woldemariam, who were at the creative helm of the Ibex Band.

Their work laid the musical foundation for Ethiopian legends like Aster Aweke, Girma Beyene, Tilahun Gessesse, Mulatu Astatke, and Mahmoud Ahmed, including the iconic “Ere Mela Mela.”

Reviving Ethiopia’s musical legacy

The re-release of Stereo Instrumental Music shines a light on a crucial chapter in Ethiopia’s musical evolution. During a politically turbulent time, the Ibex Band’s innovative approach to music helped them remain at the forefront of the scene, leaving a lasting impact on Ethiopian music culture.

The legendary musical outfit the Ibex Band, which later metamorphosed into the Roha Band, has played a central role in defining the sound of many of the greatest stars on the music scene of Ethiopia from the mid-70s onwards. Their contribution to the genre has remained influential, and the golden era of Ethiopian music continues to resonate today.

The story of the origins of the band that provided the musical backbone for greats such as Aster Aweke, Girma Beyene, Tilahun Gessesse, and backing the solo career of group member Mahmoud Ahmed, as well as backing Mulatu Astatke, is finally being told.
