Kenyan singer Njerae has released the visuals for ‘Beg For It’, the lead single off her new EP Four Letter Word.
Directed by film director Jesse Cassidy, better known as King Khassidy, the video captures the story behind ‘Beg For It’, blending shots, lighting, colour, ambience, and the subjects to complement the messaging in the track.
The visuals feature Kenyan pop group H_Art The Band’s member Mordecai Dex, who perfectly executes the role.
In the video, Mordecai, who is also a music producer, acts as the toxic lover whom Njerae is ready to risk it all for. His performance creatively carries the story with his actions.
He picks Njerae up, drives her to a picnic date, brings food, and holds her hand despite his toxic traits (being distant and coming late to their date). The following morning, he makes her breakfast and creates a space where she can be herself. She returns the favour by retouching his dreadlocks and hanging out with him.
These actions reflect the thoughtfulness and love that Njerae craves. With every scene, the two show love to each other, further driving the core message of the song – human beings are forever ready to fight for the people they care about.
“The video is a piece of my heart,” Njerae said. “Alongside Khassidy, we thought portraying a couple in a relationship exuding raw emotions is important. Acts of service, spending time together, and a lot more in between. It felt important to show these aspects for me, and to work with a director like Khassidy who I believe would bring out the vision of the music precisely.”
Cassidy, who has worked with various leading acts like Buruklyn Boyz and Octopizzo, was also the director of Njerae’s top-charting single ‘Aki Sioni (Magik Mix)’, which has recently hit the 1M mark on YouTube.
Njerae’s penmanship, often a work of artistic expression, is a source of power for those who are seeking love or those who want to heal from it. With every lyric, she creates meaning not only for herself, but for those who need to be affirmed.
‘Beg For It’ is gaining popularity among music lovers, becoming a love anthem in event spaces in Nairobi and beyond. It has amassed over 200,000 streams since its release.
Meanwhile, the Four Letter Word EP, which dropped on Valentine’s Day, currently sits at No. 2 on Apple Music Top 200 Kenya charts.
