Marioo, Diamond Platnumz, and Harmonize are the most-streamed local artists in Tanzania in 2024.
Of the 10 top-streamed artists in Tanzania this year, four are local artists and eight are African artists. The second, third, and fourth most popular artists for Tanzanian listeners were local stars Marioo, Diamond Platnumz, and Harmonize, respectively, while Alikiba rounds off the top 10 list at number 10.
Notably, these Tanzanian artists are renowned for advancing the bongo flava genre, a Tanzanian sound that blends American hip hop and R&B with East African musical styles, including traditional Tanzanian styles such as taarab and dansi.
Also among the top local artists streamed was singer-songwriter Zuchu, who has pushed the needle as a female artist, shaping the bongo flava genre. Other female artists taking the stage in Tanzania include Nandy and Phina.
Joining the most popular Tanzanian artists named in the country’s album toplist this year is the Afrobeats duo Navy Kenzo, with their 2023 album taking the number four spot in the list of most streamed local albums.
Wrapped data reveals that Tanzanian Spotify listeners are streaming predominantly African artists, with four of Tanzania’s 10 top-streamed artists being locals.
Genre-wise, Tanzanians are feeling the bongo flava vibe, with major players in the genre Marioo, Harmonize, and Diamond Platnumz featuring in the top streamed artists, songs, and albums for 2024.
‘Hakuna Matata’ by Marioo was a favourite in the country this year, shining as the third most streamed song by any artist and the number one most streamed local song.
