Sun King has expanded its footprint in Nigeria with the launch of pay-as-you-go (PayGo) smartphones, enabling customers to own quality devices through small, affordable instalments.

The move builds on Sun King’s proven PayGo model for solar energy and reflects the company’s broader mission to improve access to essential services for underserved communities.

Having already transformed access to reliable and sustainable solar power across Nigeria, Sun King is now addressing another critical barrier to participation in the digital economy: the high upfront cost of smartphones.

Through its flexible payment model, customers can access premium smartphones from leading global brands such as Samsung, Infinix, and Tecno after making an initial deposit, with the balance paid off over time at a pace that suits their income.

With operations spanning all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Sun King is leveraging its extensive distribution network to bring PayGo smartphones closer to the communities it serves.

The offering is aimed at a wide range of Nigerians, including students, entrepreneurs, traders, workers, and families who rely on smartphones for communication, education, work and access to essential services.

“For years, Sun King has helped Nigerian households and businesses overcome the challenge of high upfront costs for reliable and sustainable solar power,” said vice president of pay-as-you-go sales for West and Central Africa at Sun King, Omoyemi Tuga.

“We are applying the same principle to smartphones. By combining affordable payment plans with our nationwide presence, we are making it easier for more Nigerians to stay connected and participate meaningfully in the digital economy,” added Tuga.

For many Nigerians, a smartphone is the primary gateway to the internet. It is used to study, search for jobs, manage businesses, make digital payments, and access services such as healthcare, education, and financial tools.

However, the high cost of quality smartphones continues to exclude large segments of the population, particularly young people, women, and low-income households.

Sun King’s PayGo smartphones are designed to bridge this gap by spreading the cost of ownership into small, manageable payments, eliminating the financial strain of a large once-off purchase.

By integrating mobile money and digital identity tools into the PayGo ecosystem, the solution also supports greater financial inclusion and digital participation.

Customers can choose from a range of devices, including the Samsung A06, Infinix Smart 10, Tecno Pop 10, and Infinix Hot 60i. Sign-up is available through Sun King’s nationwide network of community-based sales agents or at Sun King retail stores, where customers can complete a quick onboarding process and begin using their smartphone on the same day.

By extending its PayGo model beyond energy into connectivity, Sun King is reinforcing its role as a key enabler of inclusive growth and digital empowerment in Nigeria.
