“Music had always been my outlet, my way of understanding the world,” Vaughn recalls. “Losing part of my hearing shook me to my core. For a while, I genuinely believed I might never make music the same way again.”
For a time, Vaughn stepped away from his craft entirely. Yet gradually, songwriting returned to him – a quiet pull that became impossible to ignore.
At its heart, ‘Monsters Den’ is about ascending from a deep, dark place and rediscovering the strength to create again. Written and self-produced over eight months in his studio, the song layers haunting vocals, reverberant guitars, shimmering synths, and even the toll of church bells to create a world that is both shadowed and luminous. Its mood mirrors the internal battles behind it: moments of doubt, bursts of rebellion, and finally, a refusal to stay broken.
“The monsters are your thoughts, and the den is your mind,” Vaughn explains. “You’re trying to break free from the loop of doubt and get back to the place where you belong. For me, that place has always been music. The song isn’t about being a victim – it’s about resilience.”
The production process became its own metaphor for the song’s meaning. Vaughn recorded countless takes, often walking away in frustration before returning with fresh determination. “I put so much weight on finishing ‘Monsters Den’,” he says. “It became more than just a song – it was proof to myself that I could still do this. That fight, that stubbornness … it’s in every note.”
With ‘Monsters Den’, Vaughn reintroduces himself not as a newcomer, but as an artist who has fought to reclaim his craft. More music is already in the works, including an EP planned for 2026 that will showcase both the atmospheric depth of ‘Monsters Den’ and more upbeat, blues-driven tracks.
